MiM History of the American Auto- Ford vs. Chevrolet
July 8 – 12, 2018
National Corvette Museum Curator, Derek E. Moore, will be leading a group of time-travelers on a fascinating expedition through American automotive history. In this tour we will see for ourselves the way that innovators, inventors, and entrepreneurs used the automobile as a vehicle to change our world forever.
Join us in Detroit, Michigan at our historic host hotel the Dearborn Inn. In 1931, Henry Ford commissioned prominent architect Albert Kahn to design the Inn to provide lodging for a nearby airport. Since then the Inn has seen major renovations but is still recognized as one of the premier historic hotels and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
Beginning our journey at The Henry Ford, where Derek will give us a behind-the-scenes tour thru an impressive collection of historic vehicles. We will discover together how Henry Ford and the Dodge brothers drove America into a new era that changed the way we worked, played and connected with one another. While we’re here, feel free to explore other areas of interest to see artifacts belonging to George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and other Presidents, along with exhibits covering nearly every aspect of American history and innovation.
From there we will go on to Greenfield Village where people still get around by horse-drawn carriages, Model T, and steam powered locomotives. You will have the opportunity to watch craftspeople at work as you shop their goods, and see where Thomas Edison created his inventions, dine in an historic tavern, and see a recreation of the first Ford Motor Company factory.
In the last leg of the Ford vs Chevy Tour, we will take a very special trip to the GM Global Propulsion Center. This facility is home to 4,500 employees and is the center of General Motors world wide effort to design engines, transmissions, and electrical systems for GM products.
In this ongoing rivalry, we will see for ourselves how the innovations of one have always spurred on the passion and drive of the other. By the end of this tour you can be the judge of the winner.
